Russian Scientist’s Breakthrough: "Develops Collagen-Based Artificial Cornea at Sechenov University”
Mar 08, 2025
Moscow (Russia), March 08 (ANI): According to researchers at I. M. Sechenov University, on average, 1 in 2000 people in the world suffer from pathologies of the visual organs requiring corneal transplantation. In addition, people often traumatise their eyes and also need surgery. However, there is a shortage of donor material. Therefore, scientists have developed a unique technology for making an implant from collagen. Tests on rabbits are going on successfully. Ophthalmic surgeons work with scientists at Sechenov university to
transplant an artificial cornea into a rabbit. If successful, such an implant could be used in surgeries
for people suffering from eye diseases. This stage was preceded by long and meticulous process to
obtain the innovative material.
