Two killed in collapsed apartment building in central Turkey

Jan 26, 2025

Istanbul [Turkey], January 26: Two people were killed and three were injured in an apartment building that collapsed in the central Turkish province of Konya, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Saturday.
The three rescued were in good health in hospital, Yerlikaya told reporters in Konya. He identified the two killed as a young married couple.
Four suspects, including the building owners, were detained, he added. The four-storey building collapsed on Friday evening in Konya. The exact cause of the collapse remains unclear, while a public probe is under way.
The incident comes amid increased scrutiny over building safety measures in Turkey. A total of 78 people died in a fire that broke out at a ski hotel in the country's north-west on Tuesday.
State broadcaster TRT showed footage that captured the moment of collapse in Konya.
Later emergency workers were seen racing through a pile of rubble to search for the trapped.
The search-and-rescue work is finalized, Yerlikaya said. (DPA)
