Study finds Nile migration world's largest movement of land-animals

Jun 26, 2024

Nairobi [Kenya], June 26: The gigantic migration of antelopes in South Sudan and Ethiopia comprises around six million animals, new research has found. The South Sudanese government says this makes it the largest migration of land mammals in the world, beating even the wildebeest migration between the Tanzanian Serengeti and the Kenyan Maasai Mara. The antelopes migrate north and east from Bandingilo National Park on the White Nile river every year, conservation experts said on Tuesday in Jubda, the capital of South Sudan. To record their numbers, two aeroplanes equipped with cameras had taken more than 330,000 photos. These were analysed by a team from the University of Juba. The survey covered the entire known range of the four most important migratory antelope species of the so-called Great Nile Migration.
Data from 251 tracking collars also provided information on migratory behaviour. (dpa)
