Romania's employment rate sees modest rise in 2024

Apr 23, 2025

Bucharest [Romania], April 23: Romania's employment rate for people aged 20-64 rose to 69.5 percent in 2024, marking an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared to the previous year, according to data released Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Despite the improvement, Romania remained among the European Union (EU) countries with the lowest employment rates, alongside Italy and Greece.
Employment was notably higher among men than women, said the INS.
It added that education level played a significant role in employment outcomes. While 90 percent of individuals with higher education degrees were employed, the employment rate was 66.5 percent for those with secondary education and just 36.9 percent for those with lower levels of education.
Across the EU, the average employment rate for people aged 20 to 64 reached a record high of 75.8 percent in 2024, according to Eurostat data published earlier this month. The highest rates were recorded in the Netherlands, Malta, and the Czech Republic.
