Mr. Trump supports granting green cards to American university graduates

Jun 21, 2024

Washington [US], June 21: Former US President Donald Trump said that international students graduating from US universities should be automatically granted green cards so they can continue to stay, Reuters reported on June 20.
In a conversation with technology investors in Silicon Valley, posted on the All-In podcast on June 20, Mr. Trump made a surprising statement related to immigration policy.
Host Jason Calacanis raised the issue that the US needs a legal mechanism to retain talent, which is a challenge in the technology sector. Mr. Calacanis asked if Mr. Trump could ensure businesses the ability to recruit the best people from around the world to work in the US.
"I promise. I also agree on this issue, otherwise I wouldn't make such a promise... You graduate from a university, I think you should automatically be granted a green card as part of your university degree to can stay in America," Mr. Trump responded.
Green card, or permanent resident card, is a certificate that allows foreign individuals to live and work long-term in the United States. It is unclear whether Mr. Trump was referring only to people with legal student visas, or included illegal immigrants or those who have overstayed their visas.
When asked to comment, Donald Trump 's campaign said: "Only after going through the most rigorous vetting process in American history, the most talented graduates can make great contributions." for America, will stay."
Mr. Trump's statement may cause confusion because the former US President has a tough stance on immigration. During his term, the government implemented measures to restrict US companies from using foreign workers under H-1B visas.
When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, the Trump administration forced tens of thousands of foreign students to leave the US if schools taught online. This decision was protested and sued by many universities, so the government withdrew it.
