Kim Jong-un oversees test of new multiple rocket launcher

Aug 28, 2024

Seoul [South Korea], August 28: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has overseen the test of an upgraded 240 mm domestically produced multiple rocket launcher system (MRLS).
The North Korean news agency KCNA reported on August 28 that the MRLS, which has been technically upgraded in terms of mobility and concentrated fire capability, has demonstrated superiority in all indicators, including the newly integrated guidance system, controllability and destructive power.
According to KCNA, during the inspection on August 27, leader Kim Jong-un also proposed an important policy to pursue in producing new types of artillery and equipping them for military units. KCNA did not provide further details about this policy.
In February, North Korea said it had developed a 240mm rocket-propelled artillery shell with improved range, accuracy and maneuverability. In May, the country said it would deploy the weapon system to military units between 2024 and 2026.
The new move came after Mr. Kim on August 26 inspected a new suicide drone test and urged researchers to develop and apply artificial intelligence (AI) technology to unmanned vehicles.
Responding to this information, Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder said on August 27 that Washington considers the threat from the device that North Korea calls a "suicide drone" to be serious, and reaffirmed the US commitment to cooperate with South Korea and other allies to ensure regional security.
