Oct 12, 2024

Florida [US], October 12: Hurricane Milton killed at least 17 people and caused an estimated $50 billion in damage.
CNN reported on October 12 that the death toll from Hurricane Milton has risen to at least 17 people and could rise further. The latest victim found in floodwaters is 83-year-old Marco Grillo in Lakeland, Polk County, Florida .
Local police said Mr. Grillo, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease, heart disease and had difficulty walking, left home on the night of October 10 and his body was found on October 11 behind the house.
Governor Ron DeSantis offered his condolences to the victims but also urged residents to remain vigilant about the dangers of electrocution in floodwaters.
Police in several localities warned residents living near rivers and streams on October 11 to evacuate as river levels continued to rise. In some areas, residents were advised not to use toilets or taps because of the risk of dirty water overflowing.
Power is being restored, but more than 2 million customers in Florida are still without power. Meanwhile, more than 75% of gas stations in the Tampa Bay area are out of fuel.
President Joe Biden on October 11 cited experts' estimates that Hurricane Milton caused up to $50 billion in damage. The leader is scheduled to travel to Florida on October 13 to visit areas affected by the storm, which made landfall on October 9.
According to The Guardian , the worst fears did not come true and the storm left the state faster than expected. However, with dozens of tornadoes in its wake, Milton destroyed hundreds of homes, rising seas washed away coastal barriers and the roof of a stadium was ripped off by the winds.
