Henry resigns as Haiti premier as transitional council takes over

Apr 26, 2024

Port au Prince [Haiti], April 26: Haiti's interim prime minister, Ariel Henry, has resigned following the installation of a transitional presidential council on Thursday.
Michel Patrick Boisvert, finance minister to date, is to take over in a provisional capacity, media in Port au Prince reported.
The nine members of the transitional council took their oaths of office in the presidential palace shortly beforehand. The council is to appoint a new interim government to pave the way for the first elections since 2016 while supporting a multinational security mission approved by the UN Security Council.
The council is made up of representatives taken from various political, civil society, business and religious groups.
Agreement was reached on setting up the council at a meeting of the Caribbean Community in Jamaica on March 11 with a view to putting an end to the serious violence engulfing the country. Its composition has been the subject of debate and conflict. Henry, a neurosurgeon, had pledged to resign once the council was in place. He took over following the murder of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021 but did not return at the end of February from a trip abroad. (DPA)
