Halla Tomasdottir elected as Iceland's next president

Copenhagen [Denmark], June 3: The entrepreneur and investor Halla Tomasdottir won the presidential elections in Iceland on Sunday, succeeding the incumbent President Guni Th. Johannesson. Tomasdottir, 55-year-old, secured 34 percent of votes against the former Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir who resigned in April after receiving the support of 25 percent votes, the Iceland-run broadcaster RUV said. Being elected for a four-year term, Tomasdottir has limited political powers in the country that has a population of roughly 400,000 people.
