Burkina Faso extends junta's term

Ouagadougou [Burkina Faso], May 27: The military leader of the West African country of Burkina Faso, interim President Ibrahim Traore, is to remain in office for another five years.
This is the result of a new charter outlining the course of the country's "transition" period, which Traore signed on Saturday evening following national consultations.
According to the document, the head of state will also be able to run in elections at the end of the five-year transition period.
Originally, an extension of three and a half years had been planned.
The longer time span, which goes into effect on July 2, was justified by the precarious security situation in the country.
However, the new charter also retains the possibility of holding elections before the end of the transition period.
