Algeria launches 3rd general agricultural census

May 20, 2024

Algiers [Algeria], May 20: Algeria on Sunday commenced its third general agricultural census, a critical measure to develop agricultural policies aimed at enhancing the country's food security, an agricultural official said.
The census, announced by Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Hamid Bensaad, will run until July 17.
A total of 7,449 enumerators, controllers, and supervisors have been mobilized to conduct the census and compile a comprehensive report on agricultural operations nationwide, the official APS news agency reported.
The results of the census will be a key reference for various stakeholders, including government administrations, economic operators, the scientific community, and international bodies focused on sustainable development goals, it said.
The North African country previously conducted two general agricultural censuses in 1973 and 2001, respectively.
The agriculture sector contributed 11.6 percent to Algeria's GDP in 2022, according to the World Bank.
