3 killed after building collapses in north Nigeria

Apr 27, 2024

Abuja [Nigeria], April 27: At least three people were killed and two others injured after a three-storey building under construction collapsed in Nigeria's northern state of Kano on Friday, authorites said.
The incident occurred as construction workers on site resumed the day's work at Kuntau Quarters of the Gwale local government area, Nuradeen Abdullahi, head of the National Emergency Management Agency in Kano, told reporters.
A rescue team was quickly dispatched to the area after a distress call was sent to the emergency management agency, Abdullahi said, noting that three bodies and two injured have been recovered so far.
A rescue operation is underway to rescue more trapped victims in the rubble.
Cases of building collapse are common in Nigeria, and local experts blame the accidents on aging structures, non-compliance with building regulations, and the use of substandard materials in construction.
