18 killed in road accident in Tanzania

Oct 22, 2023

Dar es Salaam [Tanzania], October 22: At least 18 people have died and 'many' were injured after a serious road accident in central Tanzania on Saturday, officials said. "We have not established the number of those who have been injured as they have been rushed to different hospitals for treatment, but they are many," Richard Abwao, regional police commander, told local television station Azam TV. The accident occurred in the mid-Western Tabora region, when a tanker was in a collision with a passenger bus on its way to the city of Dar es Salaam. According to Abwao, preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was caused by the tanker driver's failure to observe road rules when overtaking another vehicle at high speed. Road traffic injuries are a public health hazard in Sub-Saharan African countries which often have poor infrastructure and health-care facilities. A 2018 World Health Organization (WHO) report found that the East African country of Tanzania had one of the highest road accident mortality rates in the world.
